UditVani, NewsDesk: The Smart Cities Mission (SCM) has significantly enhanced the educational landscape in India by integrating technology into teaching and learning processes. Through the implementation of smart classrooms and digital libraries in government schools and public libraries, the initiative has expanded access to quality education for economically weaker sections, fostering inclusivity and innovation.
Key Achievements of the Smart Cities Mission in Education
- Smart Classrooms:
- SCM has established 9,433 smart classrooms across 2,398 government schools in 71 cities.
- These digital classrooms are equipped with interactive boards and access to a variety of online resources, fostering an engaging learning environment.
- Impact on Enrolment:
- Data from 19 cities show a 22% increase in overall enrolment between 2015-16 and 2023-24, indicating improved educational accessibility and reduced dropout rates.
- Digital Libraries:
- A total of 41 cities have developed digital libraries with a combined seating capacity of 7,809.
- Cities like Raipur and Tumakuru have seen a significant impact, with libraries aiding in competitive exam preparation and offering essential educational resources.
Findings from the National-Level Assessment
As part of the SAAR – Sameeksha Series launched in November 2023, 50 impact assessment studies were conducted on various themes of the Smart Cities Mission by 29 premier institutions.
- IIM Bangalore Study:
The study, titled “Has there been improvement in Indian Smart Cities towards Quality of Education through Smart Classrooms for Children, especially Poor Children?” revealed:- Enhanced teacher comfort with smart classroom tools, particularly among senior secondary teachers.
- Improved student attendance and learning experiences attributed to smart classrooms.
Student feedback:
Secondary students are found to be generally more comfortable and appreciative of SCR facilities compared to senior secondary students, who found adaptation challenging due to the complexity of their subjects. This discrepancy between teacher and student experiences suggests a need for further investigation and tailored support.
Impact of digital libraries:
The report also highlights the significant impact of digital libraries in cities like Raipur and Tumakuru. These libraries have provided essential resources, supported competitive exam preparations, and improved educational access and quality. Their success suggests that expanding such facilities could further enhance educational outcomes.
Challenges and Recommendations
Despite its success, the study identified challenges, including inconsistent data reporting and variability in socio-economic conditions. To address these, the report recommends:
- Maintaining detailed records and standardizing data collection procedures.
- Enhancing teacher training for effective utilization of smart classroom technologies.
- Providing tailored support for senior secondary students who face challenges adapting to smart classroom environments.
Substantial Investment in Education Infrastructure
The Smart Cities Mission has invested over ₹1,000 crores in educational infrastructure, signifying a commitment to improving facilities and opportunities for students. This investment has catalyzed a transformative era in India’s educational system, fostering inclusivity and improving learning outcomes.
Looking Ahead
The findings underscore the need for continuous monitoring, tailored interventions, and expansion of successful initiatives like digital libraries to optimize the benefits of smart education. With a focus on inclusivity and accessibility, the Smart Cities Mission is paving the way for a brighter future for India’s youth.
