UditVani, Jamshedpur: Tata Motors Ltd has introduced its Voluntary Retirement Scheme 2026 (VRS 2026) for bargainable employees at its Jamshedpur plant, offering both monthly and lump sum payout options. As per the official circular issued on April 10, the scheme will remain open until April 30, 2026, and is applicable to permanent employees aged 40 years and above.
The move comes in the backdrop of ongoing efforts by the company to optimize its workforce and improve operational efficiency following recent grade revisions.
Moreover, compliance with directives from the Jharkhand High Court led to the regularization of around 2,800 temporary workers, increasing the overall workforce burden.
Currently, the plant has approximately 7,500 permanent employees, with plans to gradually reduce this number to around 5,000 in the coming years.
Under the scheme, eligible employees can choose between two payout structures. The first option offers monthly payments until the age of 60, calculated as a percentage of the last drawn salary (basic plus DA).
Employees aged 40–45 will receive 80 %, those between 45–50 will get 90 %, employees aged 50–55 will receive 100%, and those above 55 will be entitled to 110% of their last salary.
The second option allows employees to opt for a one-time lump sum payout based on Net Present Value (NPV), with an additional flexibility of receiving the amount in two installments.
Apart from financial compensation, the scheme includes several added benefits. Employees opting for VRS will receive medical coverage of up to Rs 1.5 lakh annually for hospitalization over a period of 10 years, along with domiciliary treatment support of Rs 2,000 per person.
Standard benefits such as provident fund, gratuity, and leave encashment will also be applicable.
An added incentive is offered if more than 295 employees opt for the scheme, with each eligible employee receiving an additional amount of up to Rs 1.40 lakh.
While the scheme is seen as beneficial for employees facing health challenges or exploring alternative opportunities, it has also sparked mixed reactions among the workforce, with some expressing concerns about potential pressure to opt in.
With discussions intensifying across the plant, the real impact of VRS 2026 on workforce dynamics is expected to unfold in the coming weeks.
