UditVani, Jamshedpur : On the serene night of August 12 ( Tuesday), at precisely 11:55 PM, India lost one of her last living links to the most stirring chapters of World War II history.
Lieutenant Asha Bharti Sahay, a valiant warrior of the legendary Rani Jhansi Regiment of the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army), breathed her last at her residence in Patna, Bihar, surrounded by her devoted family.
She was 97 and was the mother of Sanjay Choudhry, former Chief of Corporate Communications at Tata Steel.
A figure of rare courage and conviction, Lt. Sahay’s life was a luminous testament to the indomitable spirit that fuelled India’s march to freedom.
Under the visionary leadership of Captain Lakshmi Sahgal, she joined a trailblazing band of young women who defied not only an imperial power but also the age-old shackles of gender, caste, and religious divisions.
In the uniform of the Rani Jhansi Regiment, Lt. Sahay stood as a living embodiment of patriotism — her very presence a challenge to the prejudices of her time. Her story was one of defiance forged in the crucible of war, discipline honed by the call of duty, and unwavering faith in India’s destiny as a free nation.
As the nation salutes her memory, Lt. Asha Bharti Sahay’s legacy will endure — a beacon to generations yet to come, reminding them that liberty was won not just by men on the battlefield, but by women whose courage blazed just as fiercely.
