UditVani, Jamshedpur: While tribal youth have steadily gained representation in India’s top medical and engineering institutions, their presence in premier design institutes remains alarmingly low. This disparity is especially concerning given the rapid growth of India’s design industry, which is expanding annually by 25%. Despite a rich heritage of crafts and design potential, India faces a shortage of approximately 62,000 designers, with only 7,000 currently qualified.
Economic constraints, lack of awareness, and limited outreach from design institutes are some of the major factors contributing to this underrepresentation. Parents often steer their children toward more traditional professions like engineering or medicine, unaware of the promising opportunities in the design field.
The Outreach Initiative: Educating and Inspiring Tribal Youth
In response to these challenges, the Tribal Design Forum (TDF) has launched an ambitious outreach program aimed at increasing tribal participation in India’s design landscape. From November 23 to December 4, TDF will host a series of online sessions to raise awareness about design as a career. The program targets tribal youth and their families, highlighting the vast opportunities in this growing field.
Guidance from Industry Experts
Former students from India’s leading design institutes, including the National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad, will lead these sessions. Covering 10 key disciplines such as Textile Design, UX/UI Design, Animation, Product Design, and more, the sessions will focus on:
- Academic preparation and entrance exams
- Understanding various design fields
- Career pathways and opportunities
- Essential skills and tools
- Work environments and industry expectations
- The societal impact of design
Opportunities Await: Admissions for 2025 Open
With admissions now open for 2025 at premier design institutes like NID, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), and IIT Bombay’s Industrial Design Centre (IDC), the program comes at a pivotal moment. These sessions aim to inspire and guide tribal students to explore the design field, potentially shaping a new wave of talent in India’s creative industries.
How to Join
Interested participants can register for these sessions at the official Tribal Design Forum website: http://www.tribaldesignforum.com
