UditVani, Jamshedpur/Patna: JD(U) candidate Shubhanand Mukesh – a former Tata Steel senior professional and BIT-Mesra alumnus – has surged ahead in the Kahalgaon Assembly seat with a commanding lead. He has established a margin of 50,112 votes, a decisive gap that reflects the electorate’s desire for change, especially amid a fragmented opposition from the Congress and the RJD.
Shubhanand Mukesh, the JD(U)’s state general secretary, is the son of former Bihar Assembly Speaker and Congress stalwart, the late Sadanand Singh, who won the Kahalgaon seat a record nine times.
In the 2020 election, Mukesh contested on a Congress ticket but lost to the BJP’s Pawan Kumar Yadav. He later joined the JD(U) in December 2021. A technocrat with a clean reputation, as well as a marathon runner, trekking enthusiast, and respected environmental expert, Mukesh’s rise in Kahalgaon is widely seen as a rare combination of legacy, merit, and modern leadership.
A horse in the long race
Mukesh’s political inheritance is formidable. His father, the late Sadanand Singh-one of Bihar’s most respected political figures—served as State Congress President, leaving an enduring imprint on the region. Known for his unwavering commitment to public service, development work, and secular values, Sadanand Singh shaped Kahalgaon’s political and infrastructural landscape through major contributions to power projects, educational institutions, and constituency development. For many voters, Shubhanand Mukesh represents not merely a candidate but the continuation of a trusted legacy. His steady rise, clean reputation, and disciplined approach have led many to view him as a horse in the long race- a leader with the vision and endurance to serve Kahalgaon for the long term.
A Steel City Professional Rising in Bihar Politics
Shubhanand Mukesh’s rising popularity in Kahalgaon reflects not only his family’s deep-rooted political legacy but also the credibility he built during his long corporate career in Jamshedpur. A BIT-Mesra alumnus, Mukesh went on to lead the Environment Department at Tata Steel, where he was respected for his technical expertise, ethical work ethic, and contributions to key sustainability initiatives.
A dedicated fitness enthusiast, he is well known among colleagues as an avid sports lover who frequently took part in marathon runs and trekking expeditions, balancing a demanding corporate life with his passion for health and endurance. Colleagues in Jamshedpur remember him for his humility, technical proficiency, and ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
His wife, Dr. Richa Angik, a respected medical practitioner, also played an important role in the health sector through her contributions to communities in both Jamshedpur and Kahalgaon. Mukesh’s strong performance in the election has generated enthusiasm not only in his home constituency but also among his many well-wishers across Jamshedpur, where he spent some of the most formative years of his personal and professional journey.
High-Profile Campaign Ends in Unexpected Defeat for RJD:
Rajneesh Bharti, the RJD candidate from Kahalgaon and son of Jharkhand minister Sanjay Yadav, entered the race with a high-profile campaign that emphasized his political lineage and strong local outreach. Although early trends placed him in the lead, he was eventually overtaken by JD(U)’s Shubhanand Mukesh, who went on to win the seat. Despite mobilizing significant support and leveraging his connections, Bharti fell short in the final stages of the contest. In the end, he secured only 80,655 votes, resulting in his defeat.
Congress loses its stronghold:
The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections marked a turning point for the Kahalgaon constituency, bringing an end to the Congress party’s long-held dominance. Historically considered a Congress stronghold since Independence, Kahalgaon has witnessed 17 elections since 1952, in which Congress secured 12 victories. The remaining wins went to CPI in 1967, Janata Dal in 1990 and 1995, JD(U) in 2005, and BJP in 2020. However, in the 2025 election, the Congress candidate, Pravin Singh, managed to secure only 10,083 votes, finishing in the fourth position.
Pawan Kumar Yadav Slips to Third After Contesting as Independent
Pawan Kumar Yadav, the sitting MLA from Kahalgaon who secured a decisive victory as a BJP candidate in the 2020 Assembly elections, faced a sharp setback in 2025. After being expelled from the BJP for six years—reportedly over dissatisfaction with the party’s decision to deny him a ticket—Yadav entered the fray as an independent candidate. However, the shift proved costly. He managed to secure only 10,244 votes, finishing in the third position.
A Diverse and Historic Constituency:
Kahalgaon is situated in Bhagalpur district of Bihar and is one of the six assembly segments under the Bhagalpur Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency has a mixed demographic profile with a significant presence of upper caste communities, Yadavs, Koeris, Muslims, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. The area is predominantly rural, with only about 6.95% of voters coming from urban areas.
Kahalgaon is home to the NTPC power plant. The area is also close to Vikramshila, home to a Buddhist monastic complex during the Pala dynasty’s rule in the eighth and ninth centuries.
Roots That Continue to Inspire
As Kahalgaon witnesses a charged political battle, Mukesh’s strong lead today feels like the culmination of a journey that bridges Jamshedpur’s professionalism with Bihar’s political legacy.
His blend of corporate discipline, environmental vision, grassroots connect, and sporting spirit has energized voters and inspired confidence among supporters.
For Shubhanand Mukesh, this election is more than a contest — it is a return to his roots, enriched by years of learning in the Steel City and strengthened by a legacy that continues to guide him.
Jamshedpur watches proudly, and Kahalgaon listens with hope.
