
UditVani, Jamshedpur : Jharkhand is likely to witness spells of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the next three days as a low-pressure system lingers over the northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast.
The Meteorological Centre, Ranchi, has issued alerts warning of heavy showers and gusty winds across several districts of the state.
Forecast Details
August 29: Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over south-eastern and north-eastern districts of Jharkhand. Thunderstorm and lightning, accompanied by gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph, may also occur across different parts of the state.
August 30: Heavy showers are likely at isolated locations in the central districts of Jharkhand, along with thunderstorm activity and strong winds.
August 31: Thunderstorm and lightning accompanied by gusty winds are expected to affect isolated areas across the state.
Cause of Disturbance
The IMD said the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal persisted at 08.30 am today, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilting southwestward with height. The system is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards across Odisha in the next 24 hours.
The monsoon trough is currently passing through Bikaner, Banasthali, Damoh, Pendra Road, the centre of the well-marked low-pressure area, and further southeast into the east-central Bay of Bengal.
Rainfall Statistics
Jharkhand has recorded 1004.5 mm of rainfall between June 1 and August 27, against a normal of 768.5 mm, which is a 31% surplus.
Excess rainfall has been reported in districts like East Singhbhum (+81%), Seraikela-Kharsawan (+71%), Ranchi (+62%), and Latehar (+57%).
Deficient rainfall has been noted in Deoghar (-5%) and Pakur (-16%), while other districts remain close to normal levels.
Advisory
The Meteorological Centre has advised residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as heavy rain may lead to waterlogging and disruption of normal life.
People have also been urged to take precautions against lightning and gusty winds.
