Jamshedpur: A 23-year-old newlywed woman, Rita Kumari Mahato, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the Kagalnagar area of Sonari, Jamshedpur. The incident occurred on Thursday, just over two weeks after her wedding to Chandan Mahato on April 29.
Rita, originally from Chitragupt Nagar in the Gamharia police station area, was discovered hanging in her room. Her family rushed her to Tata Main Hospital (TMH), where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The incident has sparked a bitter dispute between Rita’s maternal and marital families. Her brother, Shambhu Mahato, filed a complaint at the Sonari police station, accusing her husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law of torturing her for dowry and ultimately murdering her.
According to Shambhu, the in-laws had demanded a motorcycle, and when the demand wasn’t fulfilled, they killed Rita and staged it as a suicide.
However, Chandan Mahato, the husband, has denied the allegations. He claimed Rita was hiding things from him and that earlier that day, he saw some old photos of her with a former boss on her phone, which led to an argument. He left for work afterward and was later informed by his mother that Rita had taken her own life.
Chandan also denied the dowry demand, stating that during the wedding discussions, his family only expressed a desire to replace their old motorcycle, without making any specific dowry demand.
A post-mortem was conducted on Friday, and the body was handed over to the family. Police have launched an investigation and are awaiting the autopsy report.
Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered against three members of the in-laws’ family under charges of dowry harassment and murder.
The case continues to unfold as authorities delve deeper into the conflicting narratives.
