Udit vani,Ranchi: A significant political shift is brewing in Jharkhand as rumors swirl that Chief Minister Hemant Soren may nominate his wife and Gandey MLA, Kalpana Soren, to the Rajya Sabha.
According to sources within the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the party leadership is keen on giving her a prominent role in central politics. The objective is to enable her to represent Jharkhand’s core interests effectively in the Upper House of Parliament.
National Stage for Tribal Rights
Political analysts believe the JMM aims to project Kalpana Soren—who has rapidly built a strong political identity—on a national platform. By entering the Rajya Sabha, she is expected to champion critical issues such as tribal rights, land protection, mineral resources, and social justice with greater national visibility. This move is seen as a strategic masterstroke to strengthen JMM’s influence beyond state borders.
Two Seats Up for Grabs in May
Two Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand are set to be filled soon. One seat fell vacant following the passing of JMM patriarch Shibu Soren, while the second seat will become vacant as BJP MP Deepak Prakash’s term concludes on June 21. Elections for both seats are likely to be scheduled for May 2026.
The Numbers Game: Advantage Mahagathbandhan
The current legislative numbers strongly favor the ruling Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance). To win one Rajya Sabha seat, a candidate requires the support of 28 MLAs.
The Mahagathbandhan currently holds 56 seats in the Assembly:
JMM: 34
Congress: 16
RJD: 4
CPI (ML): 2
With 56 votes, the alliance is in a comfortable position to secure at least one seat definitively. While the JMM is asserting its claim on both seats, a contest is likely between the Congress and the BJP for the second spot.
