UditVani, Jamshedpur: The political battle for the Ghatshila Assembly seat has intensified with Ramdas Murmu of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) joining the contest, making the upcoming bypoll a three-way fight between JMM, BJP, and JLKM.
JLKM, led by social activist-turned-politician Jairam Mahato, announced Murmu’s candidature through an official press release signalling its intent to challenge the traditional political giants in the region.
The party, which has been gradually expanding its footprint in Kolhan, aims to tap into the tribal vote base and the growing anti-incumbency sentiment.
The bypoll was necessitated following the death of former education ninister Ramdas Soren, a three-time JMM legislator who had represented Ghatshila with a strong grassroots connection.
His demise left a leadership vacuum in the constituency, which both JMM and BJP are keen to fill.
On Friday, JMM’s Somesh Soren and BJP’s Babulal Soren filed their nomination papers amid massive processions and rallies.
The filing turned into a political spectacle as Chief Minister Hemant Soren accompanied Somesh Soren, while former Chief Minister Champai Soren and other senior leaders campaigned alongside the BJP candidate. Both parties addressed large gatherings, showcasing their strength and confidence ahead of the poll.
So far, four candidates have filed nominations for the Ghatshila bypoll. The last date for filing nominations is October 21, followed by scrutiny on October 22. Candidates can withdraw their papers till October 24, after which the final list of contestants will be declared.
In the 2024 Assembly elections, the late Ramdas Soren had defeated BJP’s Babulal Soren by over 22,000 votes, continuing JMM’s stronghold in Ghatshila.
Known for his humble beginnings as a village head (gram pradhan), Soren rose through the ranks to become a respected tribal leader and cabinet minister in Hemant Soren’s government.
With the entry of Ramdas Murmu, the Ghatshila bypoll has transformed into a high-stakes triangular contest, with each candidate banking on regional identity, community support, and local development issues.
The outcome will not only decide the political balance in East Singhbhum but also serve as a litmus test for the ruling JMM-Congress alliance ahead of the next state assembly polls.
