UditVani, Jamshedpur : The southwest monsoon is gearing up for another active phase, with a new weather system brewing over the Bay of Bengal expected to intensify into a depression and bring widespread rainfall over the next couple of days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), many parts of Jharkhand are likely to receive light to moderate rain and thundershowers on September 28, followed by scattered showers on September 29. A few areas may also experience brief heavy spells, particularly in the southern and central districts.
Monsoon Withdrawal Still in Progress
The withdrawal line of the southwest monsoon currently stretches through 20°N/69°E (Veraval), Bharuch, Ujjain, Jhansi, Shahjahanpur and 30°N/81°E, marking its retreat from parts of western India. However, monsoon activity remains robust over eastern and central India, including Jharkhand, delaying a complete withdrawal.
Depression Likely to Strengthen Rainfall
A well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal persists and is expected to move westwards and intensify into a depression over the northwest and west-central Bay, off the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coasts.
The system is likely to make landfall along the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coastline today. Under its influence, several districts in Jharkhand and neighbouring states may experience moderate to heavy rain, gusty winds, increased cloud cover and occasional lightning activity.
Surplus Rainfall in Jharkhand
Jharkhand has experienced a seasonal rainfall surplus of 18% so far this monsoon, thanks to multiple low-pressure systems that developed over the Bay through August and September. The upcoming wet spell may further boost the rainfall tally before the monsoon begins its final withdrawal in early October.
IMD Monitoring System Closely
Meteorological officials are keeping a close watch on the evolving system to issue timely warnings in case of further intensification. Regular updates and forecasts will continue to be shared to aid preparedness, especially in vulnerable regions.
