UditVani, Bengaluru: Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, has urged citizens to remain calm following the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in two infants in Bengaluru. Speaking to the media today, he emphasized that HMPV is an old respiratory virus primarily causing mild illnesses like the common cold and flu, with no history of being life-threatening.
He clarified that HMPV accounts for only 1% of all influenza-like illnesses identified through routine surveillance by ICMR. Providing reassurance, he stated that the two affected infants, aged three and eight months, are stable. One has already been discharged from a private hospital in Bengaluru.
Dinesh Gundu Rao also addressed concerns about the outbreak in China, asserting that it is unrelated to the cases reported in Bengaluru. He assured that global trends are being monitored closely, and standard surveillance will continue to ensure public safety.
