Jamshedpur : The long-anticipated arrival of the monsoon is beginning to make its presence felt, with light rain and thundershowers forecast for various parts of the state over the next two days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that on June 9, light rain or thundershower activity is likely at isolated locations across eastern and adjoining central districts. Conditions are expected to improve slightly on June 10, with light to moderate rainfall expected at a few places across the state.
Monsoon Front Progresses Across India
The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) has advanced and is now passing through a broad stretch of the subcontinent, reaching from 17.0°N/55°E through Mumbai, Ahilyanagar, Adilabad, Bhawanipatna, Puri, Sandhead Island, 23.5°N/89.5°E, Balurghat, up to 30°N/85°E. This indicates that the monsoon has already covered much of central and eastern India, and is inching further northward.
Weather Dynamics at Play
A key synoptic feature currently influencing the weather is a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies, extending along longitude 89°E to the north of latitude 22°N, at an altitude of approximately 5.8 km above mean sea level. This upper-level system is conducive to localized convective activity, resulting in intermittent showers and cloudy skies.
Eyes on the Sky: What Lies Ahead
While the initial showers may bring only light to moderate relief, forecasters suggest a gradual uptick in rainfall activity as the monsoon establishes itself more firmly. The coming week may see enhanced precipitation across broader areas of the state, potentially ushering in a more sustained wet spell.
Citizens are advised to remain weather-aware, especially during thunderstorm-prone hours, and to follow local advisories for any updates related to monsoon progression.
