Jamshedpur : IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued a detailed weather advisory for Jharkhand, warning of widespread thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning over the coming days.
The advisory highlights potential weather disturbances in several parts of the state, with a significant change in temperature expected by May 20.
According to the Met Centre, isolated areas in the northeastern and southeastern parts of Jharkhand will experience hot and humid conditions today, adding to existing discomfort due to high temperatures and moisture levels. However, relief in the form of thunderstorms is on the horizon.
Beginning today and continuing through May 19, thunderstorms are forecast to affect most parts of the state—excluding the northwestern region. These storms will be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds ranging from 30–40 kmph today, increasing to 40–50 kmph on May 17 and 18. Similar conditions are expected to prevail on May 19, maintaining unstable atmospheric conditions across Jharkhand.
In light of the forecast, the Met Centre has urged residents, especially those in the eastern and central regions, to exercise caution during this period. The combination of strong winds and lightning poses potential risks to life and property, including falling branches, power disruptions, and localized damage.
While no significant change in maximum daytime temperatures is expected over the next 48 hours, meteorologists anticipate a marked dip of 3–4°C between May 19 and 20. This drop will offer some respite from the prevailing heatwave-like conditions that have affected parts of the state over the past week.
The prevailing weather is being influenced by a trough line stretching from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim to southeast Madhya Pradesh, passing through northern Chhattisgarh at an altitude of 0.9 Km above mean sea level.
This system is driving moisture and instability into the region, contributing to the ongoing storm activity.
Authorities advise people to stay updated through official channels and avoid outdoor activities during storm hours. Farmers, in particular, are being cautioned to secure loose equipment and take necessary steps to protect crops and livestock from potential damage due to strong winds and lightning.
As Jharkhand prepares for a spell of turbulent weather, vigilance and preparedness remain key to ensuring public safety.
