UditVani, Jamshedpur : Tata Steel proudly celebrates the 25th anniversary of its Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) Complex at Jamshedpur – a pioneering facility that has transformed the landscape of advanced steel manufacturing in India.
Commissioned on April 24, 2000, within a record 26.5 months, the CRM Complex was a milestone achievement in Tata Steel’s modernisation journey. Inaugurated by the late Ratan N Tata, then chairman of Tata Steel, the facility marked a bold leap into the future of value-added steel production.
Over the past 25 years, the CRM Complex has processed approximately 38 million tonnes of steel, reinforcing its critical role in Tata Steel’s operations and the broader manufacturing ecosystem.
Starting with a rated capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the facility has since scaled up to 2.0 MTPA to meet the surging demand for high-strength steel, especially in the automotive sector.
Chaitanya Bhanu, Vice President – Operations, Tata Steel Jamshedpur, said, “This milestone is a testament to our unwavering pursuit of excellence and innovation. The CRM Complex has been instrumental in introducing several first-in-India products, such as Cold Rolled and Galvannealed Skin Panels, high tensile steel, and fuel tank-grade Galvannealed Steel – significantly enhancing the localisation of the automotive supply chain and driving Tata Steel’s automotive market share from ~20% in FY2001 to 50% in FY2025.
Beyond automotive, the CRM Complex has supported a wide range of industries including appliances, construction, and solar, offering superior materials like Zero-Spangle Galvanised steel – another industry-first.
As Tata Steel looks ahead, the CRM Complex remains a cornerstone of its value-added product strategy, embodying the Company’s enduring legacy of innovation, efficiency, and customer-centric growth.
