UditVani, Dumka: Assam chief minister and BJP Jharkhand co-in-charge Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised questions about a past decision made by Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren regarding school holidays on Fridays.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Dumka, Himanta criticized the move, asking, “If you are closing schools on Fridays for religious reasons, why not give our children Tuesdays off to pray to Lord Hanuman?”
Himanta ‘s comments referred to a 2020 decision in Jharkhand’s Jamtara district, where 43 state-run schools, primarily in minority-dominated areas, had switched their weekly holiday from Sunday to Friday.
This change was made to accommodate the religious practices of the local Muslim community. However, the decision was met with controversy and was reversed in 2022, with Sunday restored as the official weekly holiday.
The issue has sparked political debate, with Sarma using it to criticize the JMM-Congress led state government.
His remarks come as the state gears up for the second phase of elections on November 20th, with the ruling alliance and opposition parties intensifying their campaigns across the region.
