UditVani, Jamshedpur : Tata Steel Jamshedpur has announced the expansion of its flagship initiative, *“Udaan: Wings of Change,” marking a major milestone in its gender diversity journey. The initiative will now enable the deployment of female employees across all three shifts (A, B, and C), representing a bold step towards enhancing inclusivity, equity, and representation in industrial operations.
Building on its successful implementation of two-shift (A & B) deployment since 2019, Tata Steel is extending the initiative to nearly 550 female employees across 21 departments. This follows regulatory clearance from the government and highlights the company’s proactive approach to advancing gender-diverse participation in manufacturing. Currently, 185 female employees operate across 8 departments under the A and B shifts.
“The ‘Udaan: Wings of Change’ initiative underscores Tata Steel’s commitment to empowering women and fostering a truly inclusive workplace,” said Atrayee Sanyal, Chief People Officer, Tata Steel. “By expanding three-shift operations for women employees, we are broadening opportunities and strengthening our organizational fabric through diversity, innovation, and inclusive leadership. Extensive measures have been planned to ensure employees’ safety, well-being, and professional growth.”
To ensure a safe and supportive environment, Tata Steel has rolled out an extensive ecosystem for its female employees, including approximately 20 dedicated vehicles for transport, a 24×7 Central Helpdesk for service requests, and a mobile app for real-time tracking and SOS alerts. The company will also introduce an automated Certificate of Attendance (COA) system to accommodate transport-related delays.
Enhanced safety protocols include the presence of Security Marshals in each vehicle, *Suraksha Cards* with SOS-enabled RFID technology for direct alerts to a central command room, and a dedicated *MyPass* mobile application equipped with emergency alert functions. Pink Quick Response Teams (QRTs) will provide rapid assistance in response to any SOS-triggered alerts. Bachelor accommodations for female employees will also be made available to minimize commute time and enhance convenience.
In addition, Tata Steel has introduced progressive policy reforms, including provisions for expecting mothers to work only in the General, A, or B shifts until their child reaches 15 months. Nursing breaks and company-provided transport will further support working mothers, while crèche facilities will operate across all three shifts.
The implementation of three-shift operations will be phased, with deployment expanding across departments. By February 2026, approximately 543 female employees will be engaged across 21 departments at the Jamshedpur plant.
This progressive initiative reinforces Tata Steel’s position as a global leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion — setting a transformative benchmark for India’s industrial sector.
