UditVani, Jamshedpur : The legal fraternity across Jharkhand is poised for a significant democratic exercise as elections to the Jharkhand State Bar Council are scheduled to be held on March 12.
The much-anticipated polls are expected to witness robust participation from advocates practicing in district and subordinate courts as well as the High Court, underscoring the collective resolve of the legal community to influence the direction and governance of the profession.
Constituted under the framework of the Bar Council of India, the State Bar Council plays a pivotal role in regulating legal practice, maintaining professional standards, enforcing disciplinary control, and implementing welfare measures for advocates.
The upcoming election will determine the composition of the new council entrusted with responsibilities that include enrolment of advocates, oversight of ethical conduct, administration of welfare schemes, and strengthening of institutional infrastructure.
100 Candidates in Fray; 25 Women Aspirants
The final list of candidates, officially published on February 18, has set the stage for a keenly contested battle across the state.
A total of 100 candidates from various districts have filed their nominations, including 25 women.
Elections will be conducted for 23 posts — 18 seats reserved for male candidates and five for women.
In addition, two women members will be nominated separately, ensuring wider gender representation within the council.
From the Jamshedpur District Bar Association alone, 12 members are contesting the polls, comprising nine male and three female candidates.
With nominations finalized, campaigning has intensified, with candidates reaching out to voters across districts to articulate their vision for reform and modernization.
Call for Reform, Transparency and Welfare
A senior advocate and one of the prominent contenders, emphasized the broader significance of the election.
“This is not merely a contest for representation; it is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to professional integrity and institutional strength. The Bar Council must function as a vigilant guardian of advocates’ rights and welfare,” he said.
Echoing similar sentiments, another woman advocate underscored the importance of decisive leadership. “The legal fraternity expects efficient management of welfare funds, timely disbursement of benefits, and improved coordination with judicial institutions, ” she remarked.
Key Issues
Observers note that welfare-related concerns are likely to dominate the electoral discourse. Financial assistance schemes, health insurance coverage for advocates, pension benefits, and strengthening disciplinary mechanisms have emerged as pressing issues.
Delays in welfare fund disbursement and the demand for greater transparency in administrative functioning have also resonated strongly among voters.
