UditVani, Jamshedpur: A thick veil of early morning fog continued to grip Jamshedpur on Wednesday, with the city recording Jharkhand’s lowest surface visibility for the second consecutive day.
At 8:30 am today, visibility in the steel city stood at 1,000 metres, marginally better than Tuesday’s severe dip to 800 metres, the lowest recorded anywhere in the state this season.
The persistent fog, driven by falling minimum temperatures, high nocturnal humidity, and strong radiational cooling, disrupted traffic movement across the city, particularly along NH-33, Adityapur-Gamharia stretch, and major arterial roads.
Commuters reported slow-moving traffic and patchy visibility between 5:30 am and 8:00 am as dense fog pockets blanketed several localities.
IMD data shows that Jamshedpur recorded a minimum temperature of 11.8°C, while districts such as Gumla and Simdega saw temperatures falling below 9°C, signalling the deepening of winter conditions across Jharkhand.
No rainfall was recorded anywhere in the state in the last 24 hours, enabling fog to intensify over the past two nights.
Meteorologists said that similar fog conditions are likely to persist through the week as cold north-westerly winds continue to dominate the region.
“The moisture buildup after sunset combined with rapid night-time cooling is enhancing fog formation, especially in urban basins like Jamshedpur,” an IMD official said.
Authorities have urged early-morning commuters to exercise caution, use fog lights, and avoid high speeds, as visibility is expected to fluctuate sharply during dawn hours.
With winter conditions tightening their grip, more fog-induced disruptions are anticipated across Jharkhand in the coming days.
