UditVani, Jamshedpur: Jharkhand is set to get a major renewable energy boost with the installation of a 234 MW grid-connected floating solar power plant at the reservoir of Maithon Dam.
The project, valued at Rs 1,180.53 crore, will be executed over an 18-month timeline and is expected to become one of the largest floating solar initiatives in eastern India.
The project will be developed on the reservoir of the dam operated by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), significantly expanding the region’s green energy infrastructure while making efficient use of the water surface.
The Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the project has been awarded to Oriana Power, which will undertake the complete design, engineering, procurement and supply of plant and equipment along with the execution of the floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) facility.
In addition to building the plant, the company will also handle the long-term operation and maintenance (O&M) of the project after commissioning.
Once operational, the floating solar plant will generate substantial clean electricity while optimising the use of reservoir space.
Floating solar systems are also known to enhance panel efficiency due to the natural cooling effect of water and help reduce land requirements.
With floating solar projects gaining momentum across India, the Maithon initiative is expected to strengthen DVC’s green energy portfolio while supporting the country’s broader goals of expanding renewable power capacity and reducing carbon emissions.
The project is also seen as a significant step in Jharkhand’s transition towards sustainable and low-carbon power generation, while reinforcing Oriana Power’s presence in India’s rapidly growing solar EPC and floating solar segments.
