UditVani, Jamshedpur : The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has intervened in the controversial death of former BJP leader Surya Hansda, who was killed in a police encounter in Godda on August 11.
On Monday, the Commission issued notices to the Jharkhand Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Godda Deputy Commissioner, and Superintendent of Police, directing them to appear within three days.
The officials have been asked to explain what action was taken on complaints filed after the incident.
The NCST warned that non-compliance could invite summons. The move came after a complaint was lodged by Rajya Sabha MP and former Jharkhand BJP president Deepak Prakash.
BJP Calls Encounter “Fake”
The BJP has alleged that Hansda’s death was the result of a staged encounter. The party has demanded that a murder case be filed against the policemen involved and has pressed for a judicial inquiry, arguing that the incident raises grave concerns over both tribal rights and police conduct.
Arrest and Death Timeline
According to police, Hansda was picked up in connection with multiple criminal cases and was killed during an encounter at Lalmatia Dhamani Pahad under Boarijor police station limits. His family, however, has strongly disputed this claim. Hansda’s mother, Neelmuni Murmu, alleged that plainclothes policemen on bikes detained him from his aunt’s house in Nawadih village, Deoghar, on the evening of August 10—just a day before the reported encounter.
A Checkered Political Career
Hansda, a prominent tribal leader, had contested the Borio assembly seat four times but never succeeded:
* 2009 & 2014 – Contested on a Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) ticket
* 2019 – Fought as a BJP candidate, finishing second
* 2024 – Contested on a Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) ticket after quitting the BJP when denied a nomination
Criminal Allegations
Hansda was facing multiple criminal charges at the time of his death. FIRs had been registered against him at Mirza Chowki police station (Sahibganj) and Lalmatia police station (Godda), accusing him of involvement in several serious offenses.
The NCST’s intervention has further intensified the political storm, with the BJP sharpening its attack on the Hemant Soren-led government, while Hansda’s family continues to demand justice.
