According to the latest weather bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places across the state on June 3 and June 6.

Similar conditions are expected over eastern and adjoining central districts on June 4 and 5, while southern and central parts may witness thunderstorm activity on June 7.

South-eastern districts are likely to be affected on June 8.

The weather department has also warned that wind speeds could locally intensify, with gusts reaching up to 75 Kmph during thunderstorm events.

The prevailing weather pattern is being driven by two active trough systems extending across central and eastern India, creating favourable conditions for rain-bearing clouds, lightning and strong winds over Jharkhand.

The changing weather has brought significant relief from the scorching summer heat.

Maximum temperatures across most parts of Jharkhand are currently hovering 2°C to 5°C below normal, aided by persistent cloud cover and intermittent rainfall. Weather officials expect below-normal temperatures to continue over the next several days.

“We have finally got relief from the intense heat, but the strong winds and lightning are a concern. People need to stay indoors when storms approach,” said Sonari resident Amit Kumar.

The IMD has advised people to avoid open fields, water bodies, electric poles and sheltering under trees during thunderstorms. Residents have also been urged to keep track of weather updates and take necessary precautions to prevent lightning-related accidents.

While the cooler conditions are expected to provide respite from heat stress, localized disruptions such as uprooted trees, damage to temporary structures and power outages cannot be ruled out during periods of severe weather.

The shutdown combines a three-day compensatory leave schedule, a three-day block closure, and the regular weekly holiday, resulting in a complete halt of operations across all divisions, departments and general offices till June 4.

The company issued two separate circulars outlining the decision.

As per the first circular, employees will be granted compensatory leave against duties performed on earlier weekly off days.

Under the schedule, May 29 has been declared compensatory off for work done on March 15, May 30 for work carried out on March 29, while June 1 will compensate for duties performed on April 19. May 31 falls under the regular weekly holiday.

The Foundry Division, however, will continue operations on May 29 and May 30, as the compensatory leave arrangement is not applicable there.

The management has directed employees deployed on duty during these dates to avail their compensatory leave within the stipulated timelines.

In a separate notification, Tata Motors announced a block closure from June 2 to June 4 under provisions of the agreement signed between the management and the union on March 19.

According to the circular, employees affected by the block closure will have to adjust 50 per cent of the period against their Privilege Leave (PL) or Casual Leave (CL), while the company will bear the salary expenses for the remaining duration.

The move is being viewed as part of the company’s production and inventory balancing strategy amid changing market conditions.

The weather office has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 Kmph at isolated places across the state on May 27 and 28. However, northwestern parts of Jharkhand are expected to remain relatively less affected during this period.

From May 29 to 30, thunderstorm activity with gusty winds of 40-50 Kmph is likely mainly over the northwestern districts of the state. Similar weather conditions are expected to prevail again across Jharkhand between May 31 and June 2.

Meteorologists said the unstable weather conditions are being triggered by an active trough system extending from northwest Uttar Pradesh to south coastal Odisha. The trough passes through cyclonic circulations over central Uttar Pradesh, northeast Madhya Pradesh and northwest Odisha at about 0.9 Km above mean sea level.

Another north-south trough extending from north Bihar to south Telangana via Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh at 1.5 Km above mean sea level is also contributing to enhanced moisture flow and atmospheric instability over the region. The Meteorological Centre has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and avoid open areas, tall trees and electric poles during lightning strikes.

According to the forecast, isolated pockets of Garhwa and Palamu are likely to experience severe heat on May 27, while eastern and adjoining central parts of the state may witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph. Districts such as Simdega, Gumla, Hazaribagh and Kodarma are also expected to receive thunderstorm activity with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph.

The weather department has further predicted that on May 28, north-eastern and adjoining central districts, including Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh and Koderma, are likely to remain under the impact of strong thunderstorms and lightning.

Similar conditions with gusty winds are expected to continue across isolated areas of the state till May 31.

“People are advised to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during lightning,” a weather official said.

Another official noted, “The present weather pattern is being driven by an upper air cyclonic circulation over south Bihar and a north-south trough passing across Jharkhand, which is enhancing moisture incursion and atmospheric instability over the region.”

Meteorologists said the upper air cyclonic circulation persists over south Bihar and adjoining areas up to 1.5 Km above mean sea level, while the north-south trough extending from south Bihar to north coastal Andhra Pradesh across Jharkhand and interior Odisha continues to remain active, creating favourable conditions for widespread thunderstorm activity across the state.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi, Jamshedpur recorded a maximum temperature of 41.6°C, nearly four degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 28.6°C, reflecting persistently warm and uncomfortable conditions throughout the day.

The city remained under a blanket of humid heat until evening, when dark clouds gathered and moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds and lightning transformed the weather.

Several areas experienced intense thunder and flashes of lightning, forcing residents indoors, but the showers also cooled the atmosphere significantly.
Weather data showed that Jamshedpur received 12.8 mm rainfall, providing immediate relief from the oppressive conditions that had gripped the city over the past several days.

“The rainfall has brought temporary comfort, but unstable weather conditions are expected to continue over the next two days with chances of thunderstorms and gusty winds,” an official from the Meteorological Centre in Ranchi said.

“People should remain cautious during lightning activity and avoid open spaces, especially during evening hours when storm development is likely to intensify,” the official added.

Across Jharkhand, Daltonganj remained the hottest place in the state at 45.7°C, highlighting the severe heatwave conditions prevailing in the north-western region.

Other major cities also recorded elevated temperatures, including Bokaro at 42.6°C, Chaibasa at 42.0°C, and Ranchi at 39.8°C.

The IMD has forecast heatwave conditions at isolated places in Garhwa, Palamu and Chatra on May 26, with Garhwa and Palamu likely to remain under heatwave conditions on May 27 as well.

Meanwhile, thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds of 50–60 kmph are likely over north-eastern and adjoining central districts, including Dhanbad, Giridih, Bokaro, Hazaribagh and Koderma.

Similar weather activity with winds reaching 40–50 kmph is expected over southern and central districts such as Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla and Ramgarh.

The forecast suggests that thunderstorm activity will continue across central and southern parts of Jharkhand on May 27, indicating a mixed weather pattern across the state, with some districts battling extreme heat while others receive rain-induced relief.

For residents of Jamshedpur, the evening downpour has brought a welcome pause from the relentless summer heat, even as weather officials urge vigilance amid the possibility of more storms ahead.
