UditVani, Jamshedpur : Tata Steel ‘s West Bokaro division ushered in the New Year celebrations with yet another cataract camps, extending to newer geographies.
The camp organised by Tata Steel Foundation ( TSF ) started on January 4 and will continue until January 12 to cater to patients coming from farthest corners, having travelled kilometres to reach the camp and get health check-ups done.
Since its inception in 2013, Drishti, earlier known as Preventable Blindness Programme, has screened nearly 13,264 individuals and enabled 3723 cataract surgeries to aid the last mile communities.
So far, nearly 763 patients have been screened, of which almost 211 people were referred for surgeries.
The camp is expected to screen more patients in the coming days and seeing this higher demand, another camp is expected to be held from January 21 to January 28.
Each camp and surgery is carried out through collaborative efforts with like-minded frontline healthcare practitioners like Sankara Nethralaya, who joined the initiative in 2016.
Before that, organisations like SM Foundation, Lokeswarananda Eye Foundation helped to execute the efforts across the Foundation’s operational districts.
The cataract camp was inaugurated by Anurag Dixit, General Manager, West Bokaro Division, Tata Steel along with Mahesh Prasad, President, RCMU, West Bokaro Division, PK Singh, Secretary, RCMU, West Bokaro Division and Vibha Devi, Mukhiya, Barughutu East, Girdhari Mahato, Kedla South.
Through these efforts, the Foundation seeks to significantly reduce the number of preventable blindness cases due to cataract and improve the quality of life for last mile individuals living in the remotest corners of the country.
Tata Steel Foundation, through consistent efforts in enhancing public health, has been able to restore vision of more than 35,000 individuals across locations in a span of 10 years.
