UditVani, Jamshedpur : Jamshedpur FC’s remarkable ISL 2024-25 journey came to a brave end at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday night, as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the second leg of the semi-final, bowing out 3-2 on aggregate.
Having edged a thrilling 2-1 win in the first leg at The Furnace, Jamshedpur knew that a draw would be enough to secure a historic first-ever ISL final appearance. Head coach Khalid Jamil deployed a compact, disciplined setup, relying on defensive solidity and swift counterattacks.
Mohun Bagan dominated possession early on, but Jamshedpur’s backline stood strong. Goalkeeper Albino Gomes was in inspired form, producing a string of crucial saves to keep the hosts at bay, and the teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
The second half began with Javi Hernandez nearly giving JFC the lead with a long-range effort that flew just wide. But Mohun Bagan found the breakthrough in the 51st minute via a debatable penalty, calmly converted by Cummings to level the tie on aggregate.
Khalid Jamil reacted boldly with a triple substitution, introducing Siverio, Ritwik, and Sreekuttan to inject fresh attacking impetus. Jamshedpur pressed forward in search of a decisive goal, but Mohun Bagan held firm defensively.
In the dying moments of added time, Apuia delivered the killer blow, netting Mohun Bagan’s second to seal a dramatic comeback and a place in the ISL final.
Despite the heartbreak, Jamshedpur FC exit the competition with their heads held high. From a fifth-place league finish to toppling NorthEast United and stunning the Shield winners in the first leg, their campaign was a story of grit, resurgence, and belief.
Under Khalid Jamil, the Men of Steel rekindled hope and pride—and with a foundation now laid, they’ll be back stronger next season.
