UditVani, NewsDesk : U.S. President-elect Donald Trump lost a bid on to delay his sentencing set for January 10 regarding his criminal conviction linked to hush money paid to an adult film star.
Trump’s lawyers requested Judge Merchan to postpone the sentencing while the appeals process continues. However, Judge Merchan declined the request in a ruling later on Monday.
The judge had previously indicated he was not inclined to send Trump to jail. In scheduling the sentencing, he suggested an unconditional discharge, which would place a guilty judgment on Trump’s record without a fine or probation, considering his upcoming inauguration. The sentence would nevertheless see Trump entering the White House as a convicted felon.
Trump may appear at his sentencing either in person or virtually. The case stemmed from a $130,000 payment made by Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to adult film actor Stormy Daniels, to silence her about an alleged sexual encounter, which Trump denies.
Following a six-week trial, Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying records to conceal the payment before the 2016 election. This marks the first time a U.S. president has been charged and convicted of a crime. Trump’s lawyers have made two unsuccessful attempts to have the case dismissed.
