UditVani, New Delhi: At the 40th Foundation Day celebration of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) held at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, who holds multiple portfolios including Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and Atomic Energy, unveiled an exciting new development – the indigenously produced Paracetamol. This widely used drug, primarily for pain and fever relief, has been developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an entity under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
Advancing Self-Reliance in Paracetamol Production
Dr. Jitendra Singh elaborated on the breakthrough, stating that CSIR has developed the technology to produce Paracetamol domestically, a significant step toward reducing India’s dependence on imported raw materials. This innovation not only makes India self-reliant in manufacturing the drug but also aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India).
Karnataka-based Satya Deeptha Pharmaceuticals Ltd will utilize this development to produce affordable Paracetamol locally, further reinforcing the country’s move towards self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Technology Transfers and MSME Collaboration
Dr. Singh also highlighted 16 significant technology transfers as part of the ongoing collaboration with MSME units under the “100 Days, 100 Technology” campaign. These transfers are a result of partnerships between CSIR-CSIO Chennai and CSIR-CEERI, Pilani, focused on scientific and industrial instrument design, IoT-enabled technologies, and healthcare. A notable Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between CSIO and ELCIA, Bengaluru, for mutual collaboration in sensor development.
Boosting India’s Global Technological Influence
Dr. Jitendra Singh credited Prime Minister Modi for his visionary leadership, which has transformed India’s technological landscape. He emphasized that India’s focus on innovation and entrepreneurship post-2014 has led to remarkable achievements, including the success of Indian startups launching satellites from Sriharikota and the recent Space Docking Exercise (SPADEX) by ISRO.
Further acknowledging the country’s progress, he mentioned several indigenous developments such as India’s first antibiotic Nafithromycin to combat drug-resistant bacteria, and the successful gene therapy trial for treating hemophilia.
Encouraging a Collaborative Approach for Innovation
Dr. Singh stressed the importance of a collaborative approach between government and non-government sectors. He called for increased participation of private funds in innovation and highlighted the National Research Foundation (NRF), where 60% of funds will be raised from non-government sources. He also mentioned initiatives like “One Week, One Theme” (OWOT) and “One Week, One Lab” (OWOL) by CSIR, which foster greater collaboration and innovation across the country.
Looking Ahead: 2025 as a Landmark Year
As the speech concluded, Dr. Singh expressed optimism about 2025 being another landmark year for India’s scientific and technological advancements. He reiterated that the government remains committed to fostering an environment where innovation thrives across sectors, particularly with a focus on women-led development in science and technology.
Global Ambitions and Technological Self-Sufficiency
Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Secretary DSIR and DG CSIR, reflected on the global ambitions set by the Guwahati Science Declaration, aiming to position India as a global economic hub by 2047. Prof. A.K. Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, emphasized the need for India to evolve into a product-based economy, citing the example of the USA, where 9% of economic growth stems from the tech sector.
Key Highlights and Industry Presence
The event was attended by senior scientists, industry leaders, and MSME representatives, all of whom were recognized for their contributions to India’s technological advancements.
