UditVani, Jamshedpur: In a significant address during the ongoing Lok Sabha session, Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Railways, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, underscored the urgent need for stronger laws governing social media and Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms.
The Minister emphasized that the current regulatory framework needs to be updated to ensure accountability and control over content shared on these platforms.
From Editorial Oversight to Unrestricted Content
Vaishnaw pointed out the shift from traditional media, which relied on editorial checks for accuracy and accountability, to the unregulated environment of social media. He remarked, “In the era of social media and OTT platforms, the editorial checks that once ensured content integrity have gradually diminished.” While social media platforms have empowered free speech, they have also allowed the spread of unchecked and often inappropriate content, including vulgar material.
Cultural Sensitivities and the Need for Tailored Laws
The Minister further highlighted the cultural differences between India and the countries where these platforms were originally developed. He emphasized, “The cultural sensitivities in India are vastly different from the regions where these platforms originated, making it imperative for India to tighten its regulations.” Vaishnaw called for a consensus on the issue, stating that the laws should reflect India’s unique cultural context and societal needs.
Appeal for Parliamentary Action
In his address, Vaishnaw also appealed to the Parliamentary Standing Committee to prioritize this issue. He urged for a societal consensus on the need for stricter laws to ensure content on these platforms aligns with the values and norms of Indian society. “There should be societal consensus on this, along with stricter laws to address this challenge,” he concluded.
