Udit Vani, Purulia: The first astronomical observatory in Eastern India was officially inaugurated at Sidho Kanho Birsha University in Purulia. This significant milestone was marked by the presence of prominent dignitaries, including Biswajit Sahay, Additional Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India; Prof. BN Jagtap, Chairman of the Governing Body of Satyendranath Bose National Centre for Fundamental Sciences; and Pavitra Kumar Chakraborty, Vice Chancellor of Sidho Kanho Birsha University.
The decision to establish the observatory on Panchet Hill in Purulia was made by the Satyendranath Bose National Centre for Fundamental Sciences in 2014. While the construction work faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it resumed at a rapid pace, utilizing two hectares of land atop Panchet Hill.
In 2022, a weather observatory was also established at the site. Currently, two telescopes are operational at the center for space observation: a 14-inch telescope and a 12-inch telescope. Plans are underway to install a 1-meter class telescope in the near future.
