UditVani, NewsDesk: Following thousands of job losses in the Steel Industry in UK last year the UK Government has launched a new steel council with members including Tata Steel and British Steel. The council will be co-chaired by the chairman of Teesside-based Materials Processing Institute. The chief executives of the GMB Trade Union and ministers, will be among the members of the council.
The Steel Council is set to work toward the launch of the Government’s steel strategy.
The Steel Council will help steer plans for the industry which will be backed by up to £2.5 billion of investment. The money would sit alongside a separate £500 million package for Tata Steel to part-fund the new steel production at Port Talbot.
Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds, will chair the council’s first meeting on Tuesday.
Traditional steelmaking in the UK ceased in September 2024, resulting in thousands of workers losing their jobs. Last year, Tata Steel began replacing traditional blast furnaces with an electric arc furnace at its largest UK site in Port Talbot, Wales. Similarly, British Steel announced plans to close blast furnaces in Scunthorpe in 2023 and introduced a less polluting electric arc furnace. While these initiatives are environmentally friendly, they require fewer workers to operate, raising concerns about potential job losses.
