UditVani, Jamshedpur: Samvaad 2024 concluded today in Jamshedpur, with 316 tribal youth applying for the prestigious Samvaad Fellowship, which supports researchers and knowledge keepers focused on preserving tribal heritage.
From these, 32 finalists representing 25 tribes and 13 states were selected, with the top 18 pitching their ideas on the restoration of tribal culture and heritage to a distinguished jury of seven experts from diverse fields.
The jury included Mahadev Toppo, tribal poet and researcher; Dr. Sonam Wangchuk, Founder of the Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation; Dr. Meenakshi Munda, Anthropologist and Assistant Professor at Kolhan University; Dr. Madan Meena, Director of Adivasi Academy; Seetha Kakoth, Head of Department of Rural and Tribal Sociology at the University of Kannur; Oinam Doren, National Award winner and Founder of Our Village Films; and Dr. Parmanand Patel, State Coordinator for the SAMHATI cell.
After multiple rounds of pitching and workshops, seven fellows were awarded the Samvaad Fellowship this year. The selected fellows and their projects include:
Auswyn Winter Japang (Khasi tribe, Meghalaya): Documenting the vanishing clan narratives of Hynniew Trep.
Eyenbeni Oduyu (Lotha tribe, Nagaland): Researching the importance of Lotha Naga textiles.
Arun Kumar TV (Mavilan tribe, Kerala): Documenting the heritage of the traditional festival of Theyyam.
Nikay Besa (Konyak tribe, Nagaland): Preserving the indigenous household crafts of the Konyak Nagas.
Sunder Mohan Murmu (Santhal tribe, Jharkhand): Creating graphic novels in the Ol Chiki script.
Padma Lahmo (Bot tribe, Ladakh): Documenting the tale of Bongskangchan and Losar celebrations in the Siachen region.
Sonam Dechen (Bot tribe, Ladakh): Preserving the endangered rituals and folklore of traditional farmers in Ladakh.
