UditVani, Jamshedpur: November month is celebrated worldwide as Quality Month. Tata Steel is observing Quality Month reinforcing its belief that ‘Quality’ is not only restricted to any product, process or system but also demonstrated in every activity that we are involved in.
The Quality Month at Tata Steel was kicked off by CEO & MD TV Narendran, on November 2 during CEO & MD Online.
In his message, he emphasised the importance of ‘Gemba’ culture and urged the employees for their wholehearted participation in the Quality Month initiatives.
The theme for the Quality Month this year has been chosen as – “Towards Gemba focused Excellence”.
The Gemba walk is an essential part of the Lean management philosophy.
This encourages managers and leaders to observe the actual work process, engage with employees, gain knowledge about the work process, and explore opportunities for continuous improvement.
5 golden rules of gemba management
# When a problem arises, the first step to take is to go to Gemba.
# Check the Gembutsu (“relevant objectives” such as scrap, broken machines, returned goods, etc.)
# Perform temporary actions.
# Find the root cause.
# Standardize to avoid recurrences
As part of Quality Month celebrations, various enterprise-wide initiatives have been planned on the Gemba theme, like, Shop Floor Connect Programs, Talks on the theme by our esteemed customers, Vendor Panel Discussion, Suggestion Drive and Small Group Activities (SGA) Drive on Gemba Focused Quality Improvements, WOW (Window on the World) session, Quality Quiz, Quality Myth Busters, etc.
