UditVani, Bengaluru: In a significant development, an eight-month-old infant in Bengaluru has been diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), marking India’s first reported case amid a surge in infections in China.
The Karnataka health department clarified that the sample was not tested in a government lab. “The report was issued by a private hospital, and we have no reason to question its authenticity,” health department sources informed.
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is predominantly found in children under 11 years and the elderly with around 0.7% of all flu samples testing positive for the virus.
The specific strain involved in this case is yet to be identified.
Karnataka’s health department has put forth guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.
Preventive Measures
The risk of contracting HMPV and other infectious diseases can be reduced by taking simple precautions. Regular handwashing with soap and water is recommended, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable. Covering the nose and mouth with the elbow, rather than the bare hand, while sneezing or coughing is also advised.
The advice extends to maintaining distance from those who are ill, not reusing tissues, and avoiding the sharing of personal items. The public is urged to stay hydrated, eat healthily, and abstain from self-medication.
