UditVani, Jamshedpur: XLRI – Xavier School of Management, staying true to its mission, has taken a transformative step to uplift SC/ST youth through specialized skill training programs. The Fr McGrath Skill Development Centre of XLRI launched its first structured initiative targeting rural marginalized communities, marking a significant milestone in its 75-year journey.
Revisiting the Original Vision
India’s first B-School, founded in 1949, has reignited its foundational mission of serving marginalized communities by opening doors for SC/ST students from rural areas. This initiative aligns with the National Skill Development Mission, showcasing XLRI’s commitment to societal transformation.
Tailored Skill Development Programs
The six-month program, designed to cater to the specific needs of rural youth, focuses on essential skills like Data Entry, Communicative English, Garment and Fashion Design, and internships in Electrical and Plumbing. Over 100 students have already benefited from this program, equipping them with skills to improve their employability and economic prospects.
Certificate Distribution Ceremony
On December 18, 81 students received their certificates at XLRI Jamshedpur. Fr Jerome Cutinha, S.J., President of the Jamshedpur Jesuit Society, graced the event as the chief guest, with Sanjay Patro, Dean of Academics, adding to the occasion’s significance. Students showcased their newly acquired skills, including confident English-speaking abilities, inspiring all present.
Mentors and Extended Centres
The program was expertly guided by Jerome Sequeira and Biranchi Soreng, with training extending to centres in Bhubaneswar and Phulbani. This mentorship underscores XLRI’s dedication to fostering talent beyond its main campus.
Reflections on a Renewed Purpose
“XLRI had lost sight of its original vision. The Platinum Jubilee gave us a chance to return to our roots and re-engage with rural communities. This initiative underscores the meaningful impact of aligning institutional and personal achievements with societal contributions,” said Fr Donald D’Silva, convenor of the Centre.
Cultural Celebration
The certification ceremony concluded with vibrant cultural performances, including dances and a one-act play by the trainees, reflecting their learning journey and the transformative power of skill development.
