UditVani, Jamshedpur: Tata Steel has made history by operationalizing India’s first-ever all-women shift at its Noamundi Iron Mine, marking a significant milestone in the country’s mining industry.
A Pioneering Step for Gender Equality in Mining
This historic initiative demonstrates Tata Steel’s commitment to fostering an equitable workplace and empowering women in an industry traditionally dominated by men. The all-women shift will involve women employees across various mining activities, including operating Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM), shovels, loaders, drills, dozers, and shift supervision.
Support from Government and Industry Leaders
The launch of this all-women shift was flagged off by Shyam Sundar Prasad, Deputy Director General, Mines Safety, SE Region, Ranchi. He emphasized the government’s support for a progressive, gender-inclusive workplace and highlighted the significance of the 2019 decision by the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) to permit the deployment of women in all shifts in mining.
Prasad also praised Tata Steel’s leadership in taking the initiative to promote gender equality within the corporate world. Rakesh Rameshwar Mishra, Director of Mines Safety, Chaibasa, and Sudheer R, Dy. Director of Mines Safety, Chaibasa, were also present during the event.
A Landmark Achievement for Tata Steel and the Indian Mining Industry
D B Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Raw Material at Tata Steel, commented on the momentous achievement: “This all-women shift is a landmark accomplishment not just for Tata Steel, but for the entire Indian mining industry. It reflects the resilience of women in overcoming stereotypes and highlights our belief that diversity and inclusion are crucial for driving innovation and operational excellence.”
Tata Steel is proud to lead this change and is committed to creating more opportunities for women, particularly in its mining ecosystem. This initiative further strengthens the company’s legacy as Noamundi Iron Mine celebrates 100 years of mining excellence.
What’s Next for Women in Indian Mining?
Tata Steel’s move sets a new precedent for women’s participation in the mining sector. As the industry evolves, the question remains: will this groundbreaking shift inspire other companies to follow suit in promoting gender equality and inclusivity across traditionally male-dominated sectors?
