Udit Vani Ranchi/Dumka: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken strict action against seven medical colleges across the country for failing to disclose and ensure payment of stipends to MBBS interns and postgraduate resident doctors. The Commission has imposed a penalty of ₹1 crore on each institution. Among the colleges penalised is Dumka Medical College in Jharkhand
According to a public notice issued on March 12, 2026, by the NMC’s Under-Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), all medical colleges and institutions are required to publicly disclose on their official websites the stipend being paid to MBBS interns and postgraduate residents, and ensure its regular payment. These directions were issued in compliance with Supreme Court orders and NMC regulations.
The Commission stated that despite being given sufficient time and repeated reminders, some institutions failed to comply with the instructions. After examining the data received, it was found that seven medical colleges had not furnished the required information regarding payment of stipends to interns and postgraduate residents. This was considered a violation of the NMC directives and the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.
Considering the lapse a serious irregularity, the NMC imposed a penalty of ₹1 crore on each defaulting institution. The Commission also clarified that if such non-compliance continues, further regulatory action may be taken, including restrictions on admissions, suspension of permissions, or other disciplinary measures.
The medical colleges on which the penalty has been imposed are:
- Dumka Medical College, Dighi, Dumka – Jharkhand
- Akash Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Devanahalli, Bangalore – Karnataka
- Government Medical College, Barmer – Rajasthan
- Government Medical College, Ongole (formerly Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences) – Andhra Pradesh
- RKDF Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Jatkhedi, Bhopal – Madhya Pradesh
- Prasad Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow – Uttar Pradesh
- Pt. B. D. Sharma Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak – Haryana
The Commission stated that ensuring timely payment of stipends to interns and resident doctors is the responsibility of medical institutions, and any negligence in this regard will not be tolerated.
