UditVani, Jamshedpur: Reinforcing its commitment to inclusive social development, XLRI Jamshedpur, through the Fr. McGrath Skill Development Centre (FM-SDC), organised the Certification Ceremony of Batch 5 of its Skill Development Programme at the XLRI campus.
As many as 57 students from rural and underserved communities across two states were awarded certificates after completing rigorous, practice-oriented training.
The batch included 43 trainees in Computer Skills & Data Entry, six in Garment & Fashion Designing, and eight in Plumbing & Electrical Wiring internships. Graduates from earlier batches have secured employment in schools, private firms and government offices, while several have become entrepreneurs, highlighting the programme’s tangible impact on livelihoods.
Welcoming the participants, Centre Convenor Dr. (Fr.) Donal D’Silva, SJ, traced the journey of Xavier Community College (XCC), which has trained 198 students to date, and stressed that the initiative is about building dignity, confidence and sustainable futures, not just issuing certificates.
XLRI Director Dr. (Fr.) Sebastian George, SJ, congratulated the graduates and emphasised that employability in today’s world is increasingly driven by skills, urging students to pursue continuous learning. Jesuit Provincial Fr. Jerry Cutinha, SJ, called on students to uphold integrity and social responsibility alongside professional excellence.
Programme Coordinator Fr. Parvin Jose, SJ, shared that XLRI fully sponsored the training, which also focused on communication skills, workplace readiness and confidence building, enabling placements across government services, education, entrepreneurship and the construction sector.
In his concluding address, Prof. Sunil Kumar Sarangi described skills as the “new currency” and encouraged students to remain grounded in values such as compassion, respect and service.
The ceremony featured lamp lighting, certificate distribution, felicitation of dignitaries and a vibrant cultural programme by the students.
Through FM-SDC, XLRI continues to convert education into empowerment, turning skills into self-reliance and opportunity, and contributing meaningfully to the vision of a Viksit Bharat through inclusive skill development.
