UditVani, Jamshedpur : In this digital era, we hardly come across teenagers who are not glued to their phone screens. It has become an inseparable part of our lives. Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and X have proven instrumental in helping us connect instantly, showcasing our creativity, and staying informed about what’s happening around the globe. For teenagers, it has also become a vital tool for learning— from discovering new study hacks to mastering new skills through short videos.
What we often fail to realise is that these same platforms can also act as predators to the delicate and mouldable minds of the young generation. The continuous scrolling, endless notifications, and quick bite-sized dopamine hits have created a generation that struggles to stay focused. Endless distractions are leading children to lose valuable study time, compromise sleep schedules, and even compare themselves unrealistically with others online.
In a short survey conducted among students of Little Flower School, opinions were divided. Opinions were divided as many admitted that social media keeps them motivated and helps them express themselves creatively while others confessed it often diverts their attention from academics and real-life interactions.
“Social media helps me learn new ideas for projects and stay updated with current trends,” said Tatya Ravi of Class IX.
“But it’s also a huge distraction during exams,” added Class XI student Taruna Sudarshan.
Teachers and parents have also expressed concern over the addictive nature of these platforms. Yet, as most students agree, social media isn’t inherently bad — it’s all about how wisely one uses it.
As teenagers of the digital age, perhaps the key lies in balance. Social media can be a powerful tool when wielded with care but could also become a weapon for those who toy with it. The choice, ultimately, is ours to make.
