UditVani, Jamshedpur : Tata Steel Kalinganagar (TSK) has completed a decade of operations, marking a major milestone in India’s industrial growth story. Commissioned in 2015, the plant has rapidly evolved into one of the country’s most advanced steel manufacturing hubs, distinguished by its achievements in technology, sustainability, safety, and community development.
Starting with a 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity, TSK has now expanded to an 8 MTPA facility with investments exceeding ₹50,000 crore — the largest organic capacity expansion undertaken by Tata Steel. The commissioning of India’s largest blast furnace stands out as a landmark in this journey, helping the plant produce more than 100 grades of high-quality steel and significantly reduce India’s import dependence.
T. V. Narendran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, said, “Kalinganagar represents a new era for Tata Steel — one shaped by experience, vision, and resilience. Over the years, it has shown how technology, sustainability, and growth can come together to create lasting value. As we celebrate 10 years, I extend my gratitude to the community, the Odisha government, our employees, customers, suppliers, and partners for their unwavering faith in our vision.”
TSK has played a transformative role in Odisha’s industrial landscape. Historically, the state’s mineral resources served mainly as raw inputs for the Jamshedpur plant. With the establishment of TSK, Odisha became a key steel production centre for Tata Steel. Over the past decade, the company has invested more than ₹100,000 crore in the state, making it Tata Steel’s largest investment destination.
The plant’s digital and smart manufacturing capabilities have earned it global recognition. The World Economic Forum designated TSK as an Advanced Fourth Industrial Revolution Lighthouse, making it the first Indian manufacturing facility — and only the second worldwide — to receive this honour.
Sustainability remains central to TSK’s operations. One-third of its campus is under green cover, and the plant functions as a Zero Effluent Discharge facility with 100% solid waste utilisation. These efforts were validated in 2024 when TSK secured the ResponsibleSteel™ certification for responsible sourcing and ethical production.
TSK has also emerged as a model of diversity and inclusion, with 30% of its workforce comprising women, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), LGBTIQA+ individuals, and members of Affirmative Action communities.
Beyond steelmaking, the plant’s impact is deeply rooted in community development. Through the Tata Steel Foundation, TSK has touched more than 14 lakh lives in the past decade. Key initiatives include quality education through Loyola School, advanced healthcare services via the 100-bed Tata Steel Medica Hospital, and livelihood support programmes like the Navjeevan Cooperative — a women-led enterprise that sustains over 100 artisans.
Looking ahead, Tata Steel Kalinganagar is poised for further expansion, with plans to scale up to a 16 MTPA complex. With continued focus on innovation, sustainability, and community welfare, TSK aims to further accelerate India’s march towards industrial self-reliance.
