Jamshedpur : In a major development in the Rs 9.56 crore embezzlement case involving the Bank of India’s Kadma Uliyan and Gohaldang branches, the Supreme Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of the prime accused, Senior Branch Manager Dheeraj Kumar Jha.
The plea was dismissed on May 13, marking a significant setback for Jha.
With this verdict, the arrest of Jha and 17 other named accused individuals now appears imminent. Notably, despite the case coming to light nearly 22 months ago, no arrests have been made so far.
According to Advocate Manoj Kumar, the FIR was registered at Kadma Police Station on July 18, 2023, by Satyaprakash, an officer from the Bank of India’s zonal office.
The complaint alleged that Dheeraj Kumar Jha and Nitish Kumar, manager of the Gohaldang branch, misused their official positions and colluded with account holders to fraudulently sanction loans, siphoning off large sums of money.
Between September 9, 2020, and August 3, 2023, the accused reportedly used 33 bank accounts to embezzle Rs 9.56 crore through loans and overdrafts against Term Deposit Receipts (TDRs). A 22-month-long police investigation has confirmed these allegations.
Jha had previously approached the local court, the High Court, and finally the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail—all to no avail.
Had he secured bail, it might have offered relief to the other 17 accused as well. However, the Supreme Court’s rejection now paves the way for strict legal action.
This case has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the banking system, and there is growing public and administrative demand for swift and stringent action.
