Jamshedpur : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert for thunderstorms and lightning in several districts of Jharkhand over the next four days, warning of gusty winds reaching up to 50 Kmph.
The weather office has urged residents to remain cautious, especially during late afternoon and evening hours when thunderstorm activity is most likely.
Forecast Highlights:
April 17 (Wednesday): Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) are expected at isolated locations across the state, excluding the western districts.
April 18 (Thursday): The storm alert expands to cover North-Eastern, South-Eastern, and adjoining Central regions, with possible disruptions due to high winds and frequent lightning strikes.
April 19 (Friday): Similar conditions are forecast to persist across most regions, once again sparing the western parts.
April 20 (Saturday): Thunderstorm activity may continue but with slightly reduced wind speeds of 30–40 kmph. Most areas in Jharkhand, apart from the western zone, could experience scattered lightning and rainfall.
Why This Is Happening:
Meteorologists attribute the ongoing weather disturbance to two active upper-air troughs:
The first trough extends from Sikkim to North Odisha, passing through West Bengal and Jharkhand at an altitude of 3.1 to 5.8 Km above mean sea level.
The second trough runs from a cyclonic circulation over East Madhya Pradesh to Gangetic West Bengal, cutting across Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand up to 1.5 Km altitude.
These systems are enhancing moisture inflow and instability in the atmosphere, triggering convective activity over the region.
Public Advisory:
Authorities have urged residents, especially farmers and those in open or vulnerable areas, to avoid exposure during thunderstorms and to secure loose objects that may be affected by strong winds.
It is also advisable to stay indoors during lightning, unplug electrical appliances, and monitor local weather updates via trusted sources.
Disaster management teams have been put on alert in sensitive districts, and emergency response units may be mobilized if conditions worsen.
