Jamshedpur: In a major move aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Jharkhand, the state government has announced a comprehensive plan to renovate all old and dilapidated buildings of medical colleges and hospitals, including the prestigious Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi.
As part of this initiative, all buildings that are structurally unsafe and meet the criteria for being declared “condemned” will be demolished. Structures that require repairs will be restored and made functional.
The directive comes from Ajay Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare.
In an official communication, Singh has instructed the administrations of RIMS, all state-run medical colleges, and civil surgeons to inspect their respective institutions and submit action reports within three days.
The order emphasizes proactive measures to avoid tragic incidents like the recent mishap at the MGM Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur, where a neglected structure posed significant risks.
As per the instructions, joint inspections will be conducted in collaboration with executive engineers from the Building Construction Department.
Buildings found to be beyond repair must be declared condemned and demolished without delay.
For buildings that are in a repairable condition, detailed cost estimates must be prepared in coordination with the executive engineers.
The repair and maintenance work can be funded through various schemes, including the Chief Minister’s Medical College and Hospital Management and Maintenance Scheme, and claims received under different health insurance programs.
If additional funds are required, a proposal must be submitted to the health department for financial assistance.
The Additional Chief Secretary has made it clear that compliance with this directive is mandatory and that a detailed report must be submitted to the department within the stipulated three-day timeframe.
This initiative marks a significant step toward improving the safety and quality of medical infrastructure in the state, ensuring that healthcare facilities are not only functional but also safe for patients, students, and staff.
