UditVani, Jamshedpur : Ram Hembrom, a participant of the Outdoor Leadership Course (OLC) under Tata Steel Foundation, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing the 2nd position for Best Student among 104 participants (92 boys and 12 girls) in the Basic Mountaineering Course conducted by the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh.
The Foundation celebrates Ram’s success as a collective achievement made possible by community encouragement, the guidance of trainers, and the shared spirit of teamwork.
This year, five participants from Tata Steel Foundation took part in the NIMAS program, approaching the rigorous experience with dedication and perseverance. TSF follows a structured three-stage process to prepare candidates for advanced mountaineering training. The journey begins with the Tumung and Dimna Outdoor Leadership Experience — a three-day screening initiative that introduces deserving students and community members to outdoor learning. This is followed by a ten-day Outdoor Leadership Course in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, thoughtfully designed to develop leadership qualities and build confidence in outdoor settings. The progression culminates in the intensive 28-day Basic Mountaineering Course, where participants deepen their technical skills and understanding of mountaineering.
The initiative aims to nurture leadership and decision-making abilities among youth while offering hands-on exposure to outdoor survival and mountaineering fundamentals. It also strengthens community involvement and promotes adventure-based learning as a path to personal growth. Over time, participants have shown significant development — gaining confidence, resilience, technical competence, navigation skills, and a strong foundation in safety practices. They also build teamwork, patience, and crisis management abilities.
Most importantly, individuals like Ram become role models in their communities, encouraging others to explore new opportunities and believe in their own potential.
