UditVani, Jamshedpur : Manipal Tata Medical College, Baridih, witnessed massive student unrest on Saturday following the tragic suicide of third-year MBBS student Divyanshu Pandey, a resident of Samastipur, Bihar.
Agitated students blocked the college’s main gate, raising slogans and demanding justice, alleging that Divyanshu was driven to take his life due to continuous mental harassment by Dr. Vinay, a faculty member and in-charge of the students’ section.
According to fellow students, Divyanshu, known for his academic excellence and friendly nature, consumed poison in his hostel room late Thursday night.
Despite being taken for treatment, he could not survive. His postmortem was conducted on Friday, after which the family took his body back to Samastipur.
Anger Among Students
From Saturday morning, hundreds of students staged a sit-in protest at the college gate.
They accused the administration of ignoring repeated complaints against Dr. Vinay and suppressing the matter instead of taking corrective action.
“Divyanshu’s death is not a personal failure but a result of systemic negligence and persistent harassment,” one of the protesters said.
They demanded strict legal action against Dr. Vinay, formation of an impartial investigation committee, and accountability from the college management.
The students also flagged serious lapses in institutional facilities, pointing out that although an ambulance is available on campus, it often remains non-functional due to the absence of a driver.
They warned that the agitation would intensify, including boycotting classes, if immediate steps were not taken.
Police Intervention, Campus on Alert
Police teams reached the spot to control the situation and tried to persuade the protesters to disperse.
However, students refused to withdraw their agitation. Security has since been tightened around the campus to avoid any untoward incident.
The incident has once again brought into sharp focus the mounting mental stress, harassment, and lack of institutional safeguards in medical colleges.
Students made it clear that their movement will continue until Divyanshu receives justice and accountability is fixed.
