
UditVani, Jamshedpur : In a determined effort to bridge the digital divide and foster self-reliance among rural youth, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur has launched a week-long Digital Literacy and Skill Development Workshop from June 30 to July 4.
The initiative is being spearheaded by the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, with a focus on empowering underprivileged students from surrounding villages.
Inauguration and Vision
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Gautam Sutradhar, Director of NIT Jamshedpur, who underlined the critical role of digital skills in today’s world.
“Computer literacy is no longer optional—it’s a stepping stone to self-dependence,” he said, urging the youth to embrace technology to pursue their aspirations.
Prof. Ram Vinoy Sharma, Deputy Director, emphasized how digital knowledge can transform lives in rural settings and make governance, education, and communication more accessible.
Empowering through Education
Prof. Satish Kumar, Dean (R&C), called digital literacy the “first step towards empowerment,” expressing confidence that this initiative will build confidence and capability among the participants.
Coordinators Prof. Dilip Kumar and Prof. Alok Priyadarshi have gone door-to-door in rural areas to raise awareness, using local languages and practical examples to explain the value of digital education.
Hands-On Training for Real-World Impact
The workshop includes hands-on sessions on:
* Basics of computer operations
* Safe and effective internet usage
* Digital communication tools
* Accessing online government services
Responsible use of social media
PhD scholars — Bijay Singh, Ashit Ekka, Sudhanshu Shekhar, Chiranjeevi Kant, Uzra Rahman, Amit Bharti, and Ranjan Kumar — played a pivotal role in organizing the workshop, ensuring smooth coordination, logistics, and participant support.

The program structure and content have been curated under the guidance of Dr. Danish Ali Khan, Dr. Dilip Kumar, Dr. Shobhashankar Kumar Tiwari, and Dr. Suchismita Mahato, ensuring high standards of delivery and relevance.
