UditVani, Jamshedpur : Tension brewed at Nagar Bagunhatu Chowk in Sidhgora on Monday morning as local residents staged a strong protest against the opening of a liquor shop in the area.
Villagers said the outlet is barely 100 meters from a women’s college, a well-known temple, and a company, making its presence “highly inappropriate and dangerous.” They alleged that the shop, open till late night, attracts drunkards and creates an unsafe atmosphere for women and students.
The protestors also voiced concern that youths were increasingly falling prey to addiction, while daily wage workers from the nearby company were wasting their earnings on alcohol, plunging their families into financial distress.
Despite repeated complaints to the local police, no action has been taken, residents claimed. Left with no option, they warned of an intensified agitation, including locking the shop, if the administration fails to act. A memorandum will also be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner.
The residents stressed that their agitation is for the welfare of society—to protect women’s safety and prevent youth from slipping into alcoholism. The onus, they said, is now on the administration to respond with urgency.
