UditVani, Jamshedpur : In a historic and emphatic verdict, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Somesh Chandra Soren has clinched a record-breaking victory in the Ghatshila (ST) Assembly by-election, defeating BJP’s Babulal Soren by a staggering 38,524 votes.
The margin marks the largest ever in the constituency’s electoral history, surpassing even the victories recorded by Somesh’s late father and former MLA Ramdas Soren.
Held amid intense political attention, the bypoll—necessitated by a vacancy in the reserved tribal seat—turned into a one-sided affair right from the outset.
At the Jamshedpur Co-operative College, where all 20 rounds of counting were conducted, Somesh Soren maintained a commanding lead from the very first round, eventually securing 1,04,794 votes, miles ahead of the BJP’s 66,270.
JLKM’s Ramdas Murmu placed third with 11,542 votes, while BAP’s Panchanan Soren and independents finished with nominal numbers. NOTA registered 2,765 votes, reflecting a limited pocket of voter dissent.
A Domineering Start That Shaped the Day
From the opening minutes of counting, it was evident that Ghatshila’s electorate was voting with rare clarity. Round 1 gave Somesh Soren more than double the votes of his nearest rival, signalling the wave that was to follow.
By Round 2, the JMM tally stood at 10,919, compared to the BJP’s 5,465, establishing a head start of nearly 5,500 votes.
Smaller parties quickly settled into distant positions, with JLKM’s Ramdas Murmu occupying third place early on. NOTA drew a few hundred votes in each round, indicating marginal but visible dissatisfaction.
Lead That Only Grew Broader
As the morning progressed and rounds unfolded, the JMM’s advantage grew relentlessly.
Round 3: JMM at 16,110, lead surpasses 7,500.
Round 4: JMM at 20,026, sustaining a healthy gap of over 7,400.
Round 5: JMM at 23,898, lead remains above 7,100.
Round 6: JMM crosses 27,467, comfortably ahead by more than 6,200 votes.
Though the BJP attempted to narrow the margin through incremental gains, the pace fell far short of the dominance the JMM had already established.
Mid-Day Surge: A Contest Ends Before It Begins
The contest effectively ended in the middle rounds, with Somesh Soren’s tally surging and the gap widening dramatically.
Round 7: JMM at 32,898, lead stabilises at around 7,700.
Round 8: JMM at 39,163, lead balloons to 11,280.
Round 9: JMM at 46,150, a massive gap of 15,692.
The smaller parties and independents remained far behind, never coming close to impacting the main battle between the JMM and the BJP.
Unstoppable Momentum Into Round 12
As afternoon set in, the JMM’s dominance turned absolute:
Round 10: JMM touches 53,096, leading by 20,807.
Round 11: JMM at 59,150, with an edge of over 22,000.
Round 12: JMM crosses 64,637, widening the gap beyond 23,000 as BJP stood at 41,252.
By this stage, JLKM had crossed 9,300 votes, while the BAP candidate inched close to 656.
NOTA too crossed 1,500, indicating small pockets of neutral sentiment without altering the broader trend.
Political Significance: A Mandate in One Voice
The sweeping victory is widely being seen as a firm endorsement of the JMM’s tribal outreach and organisational strength across Ghatshila.
Somesh Soren’s grassroots connect, strengthened by his family’s longstanding influence, appears to have struck a deep chord with voters.
The BJP’s Babulal Soren—son of former Chief Minister Champai Soren—ran a spirited campaign but could not bridge the gulf that appeared from the opening round.
The multi-cornered nature of the contest, featuring several smaller outfits, did nothing to erode JMM’s cohesive vote bank.
By the time the final eight rounds began, the writing on the wall was clear: Ghatshila had chosen continuity, clarity and the leadership of Somesh Soren with an emphatic voice.
A Victory That Rewrites Records
As the final figures rolled in, the margin not only confirmed an electoral rout for the BJP but also carved a new chapter in Ghatshila’s political history.
With a 38,524-vote victory, Somesh Soren has set a new benchmark—an achievement that will be remembered for years to come.
The bypoll results also reaffirm the JMM’s strong grip over tribal belts, underscoring the party’s continuing relevance and dominance in Jharkhand’s political landscape.
Ghatshila has spoken—and spoken loudly. The mandate is as decisive as it is historic.
