UditVani, Jamshedpur : The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has announced Somesh Soren as its official candidate for the Ghatshila Assembly by-election, following a key meeting of the party’s Central Committee held in Ranchi under the leadership of working president Hemant Soren today.
The decision, finalised after intense internal discussions, reflects JMM’s strategy to project a youthful and rooted tribal leader capable of consolidating support in East Singhbhum district.
Somesh Soren, son of Late minister Ramdas Soren has been active in regional political movements, is regarded as a close confidant of the Soren family and has strong ties with local party cadres.
Central Committee Endorses Youth Leadership
Party insiders said the Central Committee unanimously backed Somesh’s candidature, citing his credibility among rural voters and his engagement in social work.
Senior leaders including Champai Soren, Basant Soren, and Stephen Marandi attended the meeting, which also reviewed campaign preparations for the upcoming poll.
Speaking to the media after the announcement, Somesh Soren expressed gratitude to the leadership for their trust. “I am committed to upholding the ideals of Guruji (Shibu Soren) and working for the development of Ghatshila. The people’s issues—especially employment, education, and rural infrastructure—will be at the heart of my campaign,” he said.
Tough Contest Ahead with BJP’s Babulal Soren
The by-poll to be held on November 11, is likely to see a high-stakes contest between JMM’s Somesh Soren and BJP’s Babulal Soren, both influential tribal figures in the region.
The seat, considered a JMM bastion, fell vacant following death of Ramdas Soren.
Political observers believe that the Ghatshila by-election will be a testing ground for both major parties.
The JMM aims to retain its traditional base, while the BJP is hoping to make inroads by highlighting local issues and governance claims.
Campaign Momentum to Pick Up Soon
JMM sources said the party will soon launch a constituency-wide outreach programme, including public meetings and door-to-door campaigns.
The focus will be on showcasing the Hemant Soren government’s welfare initiatives and its commitment to tribal rights.
