UditVani, Jamshedpur : As a severe cold wave continues to grip the city, authorities have once again extended the winter vacation for schools in Jamshedpur to safeguard students’ health.
Jamshedpur experienced biting cold conditions on Thursday, with the minimum temperature hovering around 8 degrees Celsius.
The sharp dip in temperature, accompanied by chilly winds, prompted the district administration to take precautionary measures.
Following a weather alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the District Education Office of East Singhbhum ordered the suspension of academic activities in all government, aided, and private schools across the district. As per the directive, classes from Nursery to Class XII will remain closed on January 9 and 10.
The decision has been taken under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, considering the potential health risks posed by prolonged exposure to extreme cold, especially for young children.
However, schools have been allowed to conduct board examinations, if already scheduled during this period.
While students have been given relief from classroom activities, teachers and non-teaching staff of government schools have been instructed to report to duty, mark attendance through the eVV system, and perform non-academic responsibilities.
Residents reported dense cold conditions during the early morning hours, making commuting uncomfortable.
Health experts have also noted a rise in cold-related ailments, particularly among children and senior citizens.
Parents across the city welcomed the move, describing it as a necessary step amid worsening winter conditions.
“The cold has intensified over the last few days, and mornings are especially harsh. Keeping children at home is a sensible decision in this weather,” said Anjali Verma, a parent of a Class V student.
Meanwhile, weather officials have advised residents to avoid early morning outings, dress warmly, and take adequate precautions, as cold wave conditions are expected to persist for the next two to three days.
