Jamshedpur : IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued a weather alert for Jharkhand, warning of extreme weather conditions including heatwaves and thunderstorms from May 13 to May 16.
On May 13, isolated areas in the north-eastern and south-eastern regions of the state are expected to face heatwave conditions. These conditions are likely to continue through May 14 and 15, with a more localized impact primarily in the north-eastern parts.
Public Advisory for Heatwave Protection
Residents are strongly advised to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. The elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health issues are particularly at risk. Key precautions include:
Staying well-hydrated
Avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours
Minimizing exposure to direct sunlight
Thunderstorm Activity with Gusty Winds Forecasted
In addition to the heatwave, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected. On May 15, isolated places over the eastern and central regions may experience wind speeds of 30–40 km/h.
The situation may intensify on May 16, with thunderstorms likely across most of the state (excluding the north-western parts) and wind speeds increasing to 40–50 km/h.
Atmospheric Trough Driving the Weather Shift
The IMD attributes these weather patterns to a trough extending from central Bihar to southern Jharkhand, reaching 1.5 km above mean sea level.
This system is significantly influencing the current climatic instability, driving both the heatwave and the thunderstorm developments.
