UditVani, Jamshedpur : The political atmosphere in Ghatshila is heating up as the Assembly by-election draws near, with all major parties throwing their full weight behind their candidates in a bid to capture the tribal-dominated seat.
With barely a week left for campaigning, the contest has turned into a fierce three-cornered fight among the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Jharkhand Loktantrik Kranti Morcha (JLKM).
The JMM, which currently holds the seat, has fielded Somesh Soren, son of late Ramdas Soren, its candidate aiming to retain the traditional stronghold by banking on its tribal connect and the welfare schemes initiated by the state government. The BJP, on the other hand, has put forward Babulal Soren, son of former CM Champai Soren,a strong challenger, highlighting issues of governance, corruption, and development, and seeking to consolidate anti-incumbency votes.
The JLKM, a regional outfit with growing influence in parts of East Singhbhum, has also entered the fray with its candidate Ramdas Murmu, hoping to split votes and emerge as a significant player in the constituency’s political equation.
Senior leaders from all three parties are making a beeline for Ghatshila, holding rallies, padyatras, and public meetings to sway undecided voters.
Key local issues—such as employment, road connectivity, health infrastructure, and implementation of welfare schemes—are dominating campaign speeches.
Political analysts say the by-election is more than just a local contest; it is being viewed as a litmus test for the ruling coalition’s popularity and an opportunity for the opposition to regain lost ground ahead of the next Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has tightened monitoring to ensure free and fair polling, as candidates enter the final stretch of their campaign blitz across the scenic but politically charged Ghatshila constituency.
The Ghatshila by-polls is slated for November 11.
