UditVani, NewsDesk: The first major awards show of 2025 is set for Sunday, January 5, when the stars of film and television will gather to be celebrated at the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards.
The Golden Globes 2025 will bring together Hollywood’s biggest names for an unforgettable night of celebration and recognition. The ceremony will be held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. For audiences in India, the event will be streamed live on Lionsgate Play on January 6, 2025, at 6:30 AM IST.
One of the most intriguing categories this year is the Best Director award. Surprisingly, some of the year’s major directors, including Ridley Scott (Gladiator II), Jon M. Chu (Wicked), and Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Two), are absent from the nominations. Instead, the spotlight is on a diverse lineup of lesser-known but talented filmmakers, making the competition even more exciting.
The Golden Globes have made strides in recent years toward greater gender representation. This year, the inclusion of two non-American women in the Best Director category feels like a significant milestone. Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) and Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine as Light) represent a step forward for diversity and global recognition in Hollywood. All eyes will be on Indian director Payal Kapadia and her film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ at the Golden Globe Awards. Kapadia is nominated in the Best Director category, marking a first for an Indian filmmaker. If she wins, she could make history. However, the category is highly competitive this awards season, with no clear frontrunner. Other nominees in this category include Jacques Audiard for ‘Emilia Pérez’, Sean Baker for ‘Anora’, Edward Berger for ‘Conclave’, Brady Corbet for ‘The Brutalist’, and Coralie Fargeat for ‘The Substance’.
‘All We Imagine As Light’ has also been nominated in the Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language category. Other nominations in this category include Emilia Pérez from France, The Girl with the Needle from Poland/Sweden/Denmark, I’m Still Here from Brazil, The Seed of the Sacred Fig from Germany, and Vermiglio from Italy.
In 2017, Payal Kapadia’s short film Afternoon Clouds was the only Indian film selected for the 70th Cannes Film Festival. In 2021, she won the Golden Eye award for best documentary film at the 74th Cannes Film Festival for her debut feature A Night of Knowing Nothing.
In 2024, she won the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her fiction feature debut All We Imagine as Light which has also earned her a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Director.
